TEFL Program

PROGRAM: Teaching English as a Foreign Language, TEFL
DURATION: Four weeks.
LOCATION: CEDEI Cuenca, Ecuador.
UPCOMING DATES: July 2 to August 3, 2024

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This four-week intensive course covers a total of 120 hours of coursework: 80 hours of instruction, 20 hours of teaching practice, including teaching in a rural community, and 20 hours of autonomous work (e.g., work on assignments, and lesson planning).
Students earn the equivalent of 8 U.S. credits after the successful completion of this course.

CEDEI’s TEFL Program provides students with information on current practice, theory, and research in teaching English as a foreign language. The daily schedule includes two 90-minute morning sessions focused on methodology and teaching techniques and two hours of teaching practice with local English language students.

The class sessions include lectures, discussions, technique workshops, and peer interaction, all of which prepare students to become well-trained and culturally aware. Teaching practice sessions are observed by peers and instructors and are followed by a peer assessment with oral and written feedback by the instructor.

Why choose CEDEI’s on-site TEFL program?

Learning how to teach English and learning how to teach it while immersed in a foreign culture are two different things. CEDEI offers the opportunity to earn a TEFL Certificate at its on-site English language school where over 1,000 local students attend English classes every trimester. TEFL students have the opportunity to observe first-hand experienced English teachers. The practicum section of the course has participants teaching in a face-to-face environment to real students.

Our approach also considers the importance of cultural context in learning English. Our program offers travel to sites of historical and cultural interest during the program as well as the opportunity to live with a local host family.

Since the beginning of the TEFL program in 1998, CEDEI has trained well-rounded, culturally aware teachers who contribute to global well-being and communication.

LOCATION:

The program takes place at CEDEI in Cuenca, Ecuador, a city of almost 640,000 people, situated in a high mountain valley at about 8,200 feet in Ecuador’s southern Andes. Cuenca was founded in 1557 near the Inca city of Tomebamba and has preserved its colonial architecture and narrow, cobblestone streets as it has grown into a modern, Ecuadorian city. Today it is the site of many universities, cultural sites, and it is known as the Athens of Ecuador!

The program is open to college and university students and graduates of all majors who are willing to live, experience, and teach in the wonderfully diverse setting of Cuenca.
